How we started, our biggest milestones and important feature updates

  1. May 2020

    First prototype

    Prototype of detection

Every great journey begins with a spark of inspiration—and for Autodarts, that spark came from Timo Nolle. Fueled by a passion for darts and a vision to bring technology into the game, Timo set out to build something new.He started with the basics: gathering parts from the local hardware store and assembling the first prototype in May 2020. With a mix of ingenuity and determination, Timo transformed simple components into a working system that could detect dart hits and connect them with software. But it wasn’t just about the hardware. Timo wrote the first lines of code that turned raw data into meaningful game scores—laying the foundation for the Autodarts platform we know today. What began as a personal project quickly grew into a community-driven movement, all sparked by Timo’s dedication to combining craftsmanship, coding, and a love of the game.

  2. December 2020

    First web-app

By December 2020, the first version of the Autodarts web app was live. It marked a huge milestone: the system could now detect dart hits, manage board configurations, and run a full game of 501—all through a web-based interface. While still basic, it was the first time everything came together in a way that felt truly playable.

  3. January 2022

    First announcement

In January 2022, after nearly two years of quiet development, tinkering, and testing, we finally stepped into the spotlight. With a simple Facebook post, we introduced Autodarts to the world for the very first time. There was no big launch campaign or marketing budget—just a post asking:"Would anyone be interested in testing an app that can automatically score your darts games?"To our surprise, the response was immediate and passionate. Word spread fast, and dart players from all over started joining, curious about this DIY project that promised something new: a fully automatic scoring system—free to use, open to everyone. That first public version of Autodarts was raw, but it worked. It could track your darts, run a game of 501, and eliminate the need for manual scoring entirely. More importantly, it sparked the beginning of a community that’s grown every day since.

  4. March 2022

    Marco joins the Autodarts team

    Marco Emrich

In March 2022, long before Autodarts became the platform it is today, Marco took the first step to turn a passion project into a team effort. He was the very first person to reach out to Timo, eager to contribute his skills and help build something bigger. From that moment on, Marco became a cornerstone of the project. He developed some of the most important features early on—including the Bot, which allowed players to practice and compete against a smart opponent, and several game modes that brought variety to the platform. He also crafted detailed statistics, helping players track their progress and improve their game. But perhaps Marco’s most lasting impact came later, when he built the Turniere system—a game-changer that turned Autodarts from just a scoring app into a real competitive platform.

  5. January 2023

    Reached users on all continents

    Worldwide community

In January 2023, we hit a major milestone: Autodarts now has users on every continent! What started as a side project with parts from the hardware store is now a worldwide community of passionate dart players, builders, and tinkerers. From garages in Germany to game rooms in the US, sheds in Australia, and everywhere in between—you’ve helped turn Autodarts into something truly global.

    Joran den houting

In April 2023, Autodarts welcomed a game-changer to the team: Joran. With a rare blend of talents spanning design, development, and startup experience, he quickly became a driving force behind some of our most important early improvements.Joran’s impact was immediate. One of his first big projects was a complete redesign of the Autodarts app, giving it a fresh, modern look and smoother user experience that set the tone for everything to come. Next, he took on the website—crafting a clean, user-friendly home for the community and newcomers alike. But perhaps most crucial was his work on the first version of our Auto-Calibration system—a breakthrough feature that simplified setup and improved accuracy, and that remains a core part of Autodarts to this day.

  7. December 2023

    Founding the company

    Secondaty Label

In December 2023, as the first darts hit the board at the PDC World Championship, we were celebrating our own milestone behind the scenes: the official founding of Autodarts GmbH.What started as a hobby project has grown into a full company—with a clear mission to bring smart, accessible, and community-driven tech to the world of darts. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. While the best players in the world took the stage at Ally Pally, we took the next big step in bringing the future of darts to alle. And just like the championship, we’re in this for the long game.

  8. May 2024

    Launch of the Vision kit

    Vision kit launch

From the very beginning, Autodarts was built by tinkerers, for tinkerers. The community thrived on DIY setups, custom builds, and a shared love for solving problems with code and creativity. But as the platform grew, so did the audience—and we started hearing a different kind of request:"I love what you're doing... but I just want something that works out of the box."We heard you.So in May 2024, we launched Autodarts Vision—our first ready-to-use, camera-based tracking system. No wiring, no soldering, no configuration headaches. Just mount the camera, plug it in, and you're playing. Vision brought the magic of autoscoring to a whole new group of players who didn’t want to build a system themselves, but still wanted the full Autodarts experience.
